Cow Longhorns

Cow Longhorns

Trees, Elephants And Steers Oh My!

College mascots, some of them we love, some we loathe. The often cute, but always iconic creatures that can be seen roaming the sidelines of any college football game at any given time. Sometimes they are animals, sometimes costumes, sometimes animal costumes and sometimes they are things that we just have no clue what they are at all. They often embody the history, traditions and values of the school they represent and they can bring multitudes of passionate alumni to their unyielding defense in countless sports arguments.  Considering every school out there, that makes for literally millions of fans in the world. The biggest being college fans. There some pretty interesting stories behind some of them. Here are a few. For a great education go to military education.

From the “what on earth is that?” category we proudly present to you Brutus Buckeye, of the Ohio state Buckeyes. At first glance you might assume he is a hockey puck or brownie or some other ambiguous object. The term Buckeye is a reference to the original pioneers that setteled the area. They in turn got their name from the Buckeye tree that grows in the area. Brutus is said to resemble the nut from a Buckeye tree, ‘said to resemble’ being the key word, but whatever the case, he is a very unique mascot with quite a history. If you are in the marines and interested in college, go to military university for great education.

Whatever a Crimson Tide is, it’s the symbol for the University of Alabama. So if you were going to pick an animal to represent a red tide you undoubtably pick an elephant right? Makes sense to me. Meet “Big Al” the official elephant mascot of Alabama.

“Big Al” started back in the 1930’s in a surprisingly simple manner. Back in the 1930′s a reporter at a football game once wrote that when the first team was heard running onto the field a fan called out, “hold your horses, the elephants are coming.” The idea of the elephant took root. Naturally, it was just a matter of time before one Melford Espey Jr. decided to take it up a notch and wear an elephant costume. I would probably wear a costume if that was my name too. Eventually young Melford would become the school administrator who was asked to think up a mascot for the Tide. They chose the elephant. After much brain storming the student body voted on the name Big Al. Thus it began. For a great online education go to online navy education today.

The University of Texas also has a mascot with an interesting story.  Obviously they use the longhorn cow as their mascot. Okay, nothing odd about that, but what is interesting is how it got its name. The longhorn they use is always named Bevo. Bevo was originally Bo, and while this is not official, the rumor goes something like this. In 1916, Texas A&M, their archrivel, defeated Texas 13-0. After that a group of A&M students kidnapped Bevo and branded 13-0 on his side. Well, UT couldn’t have this, so is said the 13-0 into Bevo. While this story has never been proven it is more interesting than the newest theory that claims Bevo is derived from the term “beeve”, which used to be used to describe cattle headed to the meat markets. Bevo comes from a long line of Longhorsn, he is currently Bevo the 14th.
